A Simple Guide to a More Comprehensive Girl Clothes Vocabulary

The difference between a toddler and a pre-teen is often referred to as ‘girl clothes’. Little girls have certain basic requirements, and often they have their own terminology for these. They may refer to undergarments in terms we use today (shoes, tights, jeans, dresses etc). Here, we will look at some of the girl’s clothes vocabulary, and how it can help you when dressing your child.

The word panty is often used for underwear in girls. They may also refer to nightclothes such as nightshirts, nightdresses and baby dolls. Nighties are a generic term for any garment that covers the torso. For example, it may mean a t-shirt with a long, stretchable neckline.

Clothes have many shades and variations between boys and girls. For example, girls often like to play with colours such as pink, yellow and blue. Boys tend to like solid black or navy. This is just one example of the colourful variations available. Other colours which may be found in girl clothes are white, green, pink, purple, orange, yellow, cream, light blue and of course, bright red. Obviously the shades are endless.

Girls’ clothes are often more revealing than those for boys. A boy’s shirt will usually cover the waist and arms, leaving the legs exposed. A girl’s top often features a short, V-necked style, with spaghetti straps or bolero jackets for extra warmth. Again, this exposes the legs, but not always to the maximum extent. Additionally, dresses can feature skirts of varying lengths, with some having tie back tops, and others incorporating a drawstring at the top, to adjust the length.

Most toddlers and young children cannot speak publicly, so clothes are an important way of expressing yourself. ‘Dressy’ is often used to describe how you feel about yourself in clothing, and what type of outfit you would like to wear. ‘Natural’ on the other hand, describes items that appear to be entirely natural, without any artificial embellishments or colours added. ‘Sci-fi’ and ‘Spooky’ both describe types of clothing that are very unusual, probably not seen in everyday situations.

Another common term used in toddler and girl clothes is ‘flats’. These are often referred to by name, but may also be referred to as jeans, or shorts. They usually end at the ankles. They are worn on the bottom half of the hips, to help protect the hips from wardrobe disasters. Girl clothes for toddlers usually have some form of shorts, either knee-length or full length.
